What is Hair Structure? Which one is the most important point affecting the hair quality?

  • What is Hair Structure: The hair structure is divided into 3 distinct parts:
  1. The Cuticle

The cuticle is your hair’s protective layer, composed of overlapping cells — like fish scales or roof tiles, but facing downwards. A healthy cuticle is smooth and flat. This gives your hair shine and protects the inner layers from damage. It also minimizes the movement of moisture in and out of the underlying cortex, thus maintaining your hair’s hydration balance and flexibility. A thin, protective outer layer that contains the nourishing part essential to the development of the hair, highly keratinized, composed of scale-like cells that overlap one another, these are about 60 micrometers long and 6 micrometers wide. However, chemical processes and weathering can lift the cuticle and disrupt this balance, causing your hair to become dry and brittle.

  1. The Cortex

The cortex forms the main bulk and pigment (color) of your hair. It consists of long keratin filaments, which are held together by disapplied and hydrogen bonds. The health of your cortex depends largely on the integrity of the cuticle protecting it. the main component of the hair, where we find long chains of keratin that give the hair its elasticity, flexibility and resistance. The cells of the cortex are linked together by an intercellular cement rich in lipids and proteins. Each cell is made up of bundles oriented in the direction of the length of the hair: these are the microfibrils, which are themselves made up of microfibrils, which in turn are made up of protofibrils.

  1. The Medulla

The medulla, only present in thicker hair types, is the innermost layer of your hair. It consists of a soft, thin core of transparent cells and air spaces. Central part of the shaft, it is composed of an amorphous, soft and greasy substance.

The cortex: the main component of the hair, where we find long chains of keratin that give the hair its elasticity, flexibility and resistance. The cells of the cortex are linked together by an intercellular cement rich in lipids and proteins. Protein (keratin) is indispensable for healthy and beautiful hair: Protein is the main structural component of hair, is one of the building blocks of life, promotes cell growth and self-repair, and increases the growth healthy shine of hair. So, hair without protein, the hair structure will be completely destroyed, not only dry, split ends but also very easy to break.
